Awards and Scholarships
Awards
- B. B. Comer Mathematics Prize. Initiated in 1925, the Comer Prize is the most prestigious award presented to a graduating senior. No application is necessary. All students who have taken advanced Mathematics courses will be considered.
- Thomas Waverly Palmer Mathematics Award. This award was established in 1958 by the family of a former head of the Division of Sciences and Mathematics. A cash prize is given on honors day to the top Mathematics student or students. All students who have taken advanced mathematics courses will be considered.
Scholarships
In addition to the extensive package of financial aid, grants, and scholarships offered by the University, the following scholarships were endowed specifically for students in Mathematics.
- The Comer Foundation Scholarship in Mathematics. Established by the Comer Foundation of Sylacauga, Alabama, to support the education of outstanding students enrolled full-time in the College of Arts and Sciences with a major in Mathematics. Awarded to graduating seniors who are residents of Alabama, and who meet eligibility requirements. Renewable for a total of up to 4 years support. Amount: $2500 per year. - Fred A. Lewis Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to senior winner of the High School Mathematics Tournament held by the Mathematics Department each year. Amount: $1000 per year for up to 4 years.
- Dr. Fred A. and Frances Pickens Lewis Endowed Scholarship--Amount: Variable; renewable for remaining undergraduate and/or graduate education, if performance and academic progress merit retention, Availability: Awarded as funds are available, Eligibility: Deserving, full-time student majoring in pure mathematics (not statistical or applied mathematics); junior level or above; applicant must have interest in teaching pure mathematics, but must be enrolled and pursuing a degree in the College of Arts and Sciences, Contact: Department of Mathematics, Box 870350, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0350, Deadline For Application: March 1.
- Dr. Henry C. Miller, Jr. Endowed Mathematics Fellowship. This Fellowship is awarded to highly talented doctoral candidates who plan to pursue their graduate degrees in Mathematics at the University of Alabama. Eligibility is determined by graduate entrance examination scores, quality of work at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, recommendations, and personal interviews. Amount: Up to $5,000 per year. - Will T. O'Mary Memorial Endowed Math Scholarship--Amount: Variable, Availability: Awarded as funds are available, Eligibility: ACT math score of 30 or higher; priority to student from Walker County or Winston County in Alabama, Contact: Presidential Honors Scholarship Committee, Box 870132, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0132, Deadline For Application: February 1.
