Title: Ahlfors’ Extension of the Schwarz-Pick Lemma

Abstract: I will discuss Ahlfors’ extension of the Schwarz-Pick lemma from complex analysis.  This lemma involves negatively curved conformal metrics called ultrahyperbolic metrics and compares them to Poincare metric on the unit disc.  As an application, I will discuss a proof of Picard’s theorem.  (Don’t worry, you don’t need to know any hyperbolic or Riemannian geometry to understand this talk).
