Math Placement Exam

The online Math Placement exam is a web based assessment designed to measure your level of skill in various areas of mathematics. The University of Alabama uses the placement to accurately place you in a math course where you have the greatest chance of success.

New Freshmen

The University places freshmen students in their first UA mathematics class based on previous college mathematics credit, ACT/SAT Math Sub Score or the online Math assessment. If you choose to take the online Math placement exam, you must complete at least one week prior to your orientation session to ensure the score has been posted to your record. If you are having trouble accessing the placement exam, please submit a request via the Request Information page. If submitting a request, please include your CWID number and myBama username.

New Transfers

The University places transfer and other undergraduate students in their first UA mathematics class based on previous college mathematics credit or the online Math placement if no prior college credit has been received. If you require the online Math placement, you must complete it at least one week prior to your orientation session and/or registration date to ensure the score has been posted to your record. If you require the online Math assessment or having trouble accessing the assessment, please submit a request via the  Request Information  page. Current Enrolled, Readmitted and Other New Students

The University places currently enrolled and other undergraduate students in their first UA mathematics class based on previous college mathematics credit or the online Math Assessment if no prior college credit has been received. If you require the online Math assessment or having trouble accessing the assessment, please submit a request via the Request Information page. Important Information About the Math Placement

In order for the results to best reflect your abilities, it is important that you follow a few simple guidelines.

  • Do not use a calculator – we are trying to gauge your computational skills
  • Complete each exercise yourself with no help from another person or computer software
  • Have a scratch paper and pencil/pen available for completing your computations
  • 1 hour time limit
  • Web-based
  • Multiple choice
  • Assessment results available upon completion (recommended course placement)
    • An email of your course placement will be sent to your Crimson email address.
  • Assessments are valid for 1-year from completion date
  • Topics are based on information taught in undergraduate mathematics courses at UA

Accessing DegreeWorks for Math Course Recommendation

  • Log into your student’s MyBama account
  • Select the “Student” tab
  • Under the Student Services header, select the “DegreeWorks” icon
  • The math placement course recommendation is located in the section directly under Degree Works Production

Accessing the Math Placement

  • Log into your student’s MyBama account
  • Select the “Admissions/Scholarship” tab
  • Under the Undergraduate Admission header, select  “Admitted Freshman Next Steps” or “Admitted Transfer Next Steps”
  • You will be redirected and required to login to blackboard. Once you login to blackboard you will locate the math assessment under your courses. Once you locate the math assessment, please click on the assessment to begin. You will have 1-hour to complete the assessment and you only get one attempt.
  • Once you have completed the math assessment it will take 24 to 48 hours before that placement uploads to the Banner system.  Once it has uploaded to the Banner system, you can register for that class.

System Requirements for the Math Placement

  • Laptops and desktops only. Tablets and other devices are not supported at this time.
  • The Assessment works best on a broadband internet connection and this is the preferred method.
  • The following browsers tend to work best with the assessment: Internet Explorer/Edge or Firefox.
