Applied Math Seminar – Evie A. Malaia, Communicative Disorders, University of Alabama

December 7, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Title: Mathematical models in cognitive neuroscience: advances and opportunities

Abstract:  High prevalence of neurodegenerative (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s) and neurodevelopmental

(Autism spectrum disorders, ADHD) disorders in modern population increased the demand
for precision therapeutic interventions. However, the current understanding of how those
diseases develop and affect brain processing over time is incomplete, and testing of
in-vivo interventions is likely to take a long time. Data-driven modeling of neural
activity at various spatiotemporal levels and across scales is a promising approach to eliciting the mechanisms of the disorders, as well as “in-vitro” prototyping of interventions. The conversation will cover current approaches to neuroscience data for mathematical modeling of brain’s function (oscillatory models, Bayesian brain, scale-free microstates, and free energy principle), and discuss the potential for application of mathematical modeling in neuroscience.
