Association of Women in Mathematics – Presentation by Kabe Moen
302 Gordon Palmer HallUA's AWM Student Chapter At this meeting, we will have free food for everyone, a detailed list of events for the semester, and a presentation by Dr. Kabe Moen on how to give great presentations! Also, WE NEED OFFICERS for the 2018-2019 Executive Board for UA's AWM Chapter. You may let us know if you are interested at this meeting or via
Analysis Seminar – David Cruz-Uribe (University of Alabama)
227 Gordon Palmer Hall 505 Hackberry Lane, Tuscaloosa, AL, United StatesTitle: Poincare inequalities and Neumann problems for the p-Laplacian Abstract: I will discuss my recent work with Scott Rodney on the following equivalence: the existence of solutions to a degenerate p-Laplacian equation and the existence of a weighted (p,p) Poincare inequality. Our results are in the context of degenerate Sobolev spaces, where the degeneracy is

Session One, 9 - 11:30 a.m. Data Analytics with MATLAB Using Data Analytics to turn large volumes of complex data into actionable information can help you improve engineering design and
Analysis Seminar – Shibin Dai (University of Alabama)
227 Gordon Palmer Hall 505 Hackberry Lane, Tuscaloosa, AL, United StatesTitle: An introduction to Gamma convergence Abstract: Many mathematical problems involve parameters that make those problems more and more complex or degenerate. It is of great interest to study the limiting behavior when the parameter varies. One class of such problems can be studied in a variational framework. Writing $F_\epsilpon$ as a class of functional

302 Gordon Palmer HallApplied Math Seminar – Vishesh Vikas (University of Alabama)
228 Gordon Palmer Hall Tuscaloosa, AL, United StatesTitle: Applied Mathematics for Soft Robotics Abstract: Soft materials are a bulk or composite collection of matter that undergoes deformations of similar or greater magnitude than the deformation of the environment, either plastically or elastically, within the force regime applied by its environment. For roboticists, soft materials can withstand impacts, are elastic and highly deformable,

Colloquium – Maria Laura delle Monache (Inria Grenoble – Rhône Alpes)
346 Gordon Palmer Hall 505 Hackberry Lane, Tuscaloosa, AL, United StatesTopic: Control of traffic flow: from ramp metering to autonomous vehicles Abstract: In this talk, we will consider different control frameworks for traffic flow. In particular, we will show the evolution of traffic control from classical strategies (for example ramp-metering) to more modern approaches using autonomous vehicles. We will introduce different ways to describe mathematically
Analysis Seminar – Bingyuan Liu (University of California, Riverside) Geometry of the @-Neumann problem and the D{F index
227 Gordon Palmer Hall 505 Hackberry Lane, Tuscaloosa, AL, United StatesAbstract. We shall rst introduce the classical works of Hormander and Kohn on the L2 estimates of the @(-Neumann) problem on bounded domains and then describe applications in complex geometry. It turns out that the boundary geometry plays the fundamental role in the Sobolev estimates of the @ solution. The Diederich{Fornss index is the geometric invariant which predicts the estimates.
