Applied Math Seminar – Ali Pakniyat (Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Alabama)
346 Gordon Palmer Hall 505 Hackberry Lane, Tuscaloosa, AL, United StatesTitle: Dualities in optimal control theory Abstract: Duality is a mathematical principle which, when it emerges, signifies the intrinsic relations between two distinct concepts, theorems or structures. In this talk, I will present three dualities which emerge in optimal control theory: (i) the duality in the Minimum Principle (MP) between the finite dimensional spaces of state variations
Analysis Seminar – Atanas Stefanov
231 Gordon Palmer HallTitle: On the long term dynamics of the Landau-DeGennes gradient flow Abstract: We study the gradient flow of the Landau-deGennes energy functionals, in the physically relevant spatial dimensions $d=2,3$. We establish global well-posedness and global exponential time decay bounds for large $H^1$ data in the 2D case, and uniform bounds for large data in 3D.

346 Gordon Palmer Hall 505 Hackberry Lane, Tuscaloosa, AL, United StatesTitle: Quantifying model-form uncertainty with an application to subsurface transport Abstract: Computational models are increasingly used to make predictions affecting high-consequence engineering design and policy decisions. However, incomplete information about the represented phenomena and limitations in computational resources require approximations and simplifications that can lead to uncertainties in the computational models’ forms and errors in

Title: Bound-Preserving and Phase-wise Conservative Schemes for Incompressible Two-Phase Flow in Porous Media with Multiple Capillary Pressure Functions Abstract: Two or multiple phases commonly occur as fluid mixture in petroleum industry, where oil, gas and water are often produced and transported together. As a result, petroleum reservoir engineers spent great efforts in the development and
Francis Su – Robert F. Olin Endowed Distinguished Lecture Series in Science
38 Lloyd Hall 503 6th Avenue, Tuscaloosa, AL, United StatesThe Robert F. Olin Endowed Distinguished Lecture Series in Science was established and endowed in UA’s College of Arts and Sciences by Robert F. Olin in order to bring speakers to campus to discuss how the sciences have impacted society and humanity, through the lenses of the research of the speaker and others in their
